News from our friends
Over the last few weeks, we’ve had some news from the SFWP family. I was contacted by one of our previous Awards Program finalists Masha Hamilton (
www.mashahamilton.com
), whose latest book, The Camel Bookmobile, was inspired by the Camel Library, which operates out of Garissa in Kenya’s isolated Northeastern Province near the unstable border with Somalia. You can read more about the library, and help support them, at

1) Welcome -- Forums and Archives
2) The 2007 LAP
3) October Tour Schedule
Welcome to the SFWP newsletter. We are, once again, in the process of
changing our newsletter software. Many of you may have missed the
September newsletter, which is now archived on our new message boards
at
www.sfwp.com/forum
.
We set up those forums not only as a clearinghouse for events, press
releases and newsletters, but also in the hopes of having a dialogue
with the SFWP community. With our literary journal enjoying a new era
of development, the 2007 Awards Program winding down to the deadline,
and several titles heading out through our publishing house, SFWP is
seeing spectacular growth. As we grow, I don't want to leave the
community behind. There is no doubt that all of you reading are the
reason this company thrives today.
Two big points for October. The first is the Literary Awards Program,
judged by Robert Olen Butler. We're moving towards that December 31st
deadline and looking forward to those entries. This year sees a grand
prize of $2500, a second prize of $1500, and a third prize of $1000.
Of course, our publishing house will be watching the finalists.
Guidelines and an application form can be found at
www.sfwpawards.com
.
Don't hesitate to give us a shout - via email or the forums - if you
have any questions.
Next up is the October tour schedule for our latest release, The
Fires, by NPR commentator Alan Cheuse. Many of you are probably
familiar with Alan, and we've been talking about this title in past
newsletters. But if you're a new subscriber, head on over to
www.alancheuse.com/the_fires.html
to learn more about the title, read
an excerpt, and see what the critics are saying.
Alan's tour details are at
www.alancheuse.com/tour07.html
. His next
stop is Ann Arbor, MI on October 9th at the Shaman Drum Bookstore.
From there he heads to Chicago, then Seattle. On October 16th, Alan
will be at Prairie Lights in Iowa City, then Portland, OR, then San
Francisco, then Pasadena.

Alan Cheuse on Weekend Edition
Welcome to the Santa Fe Writers Project November newsletter. Big news
this month Alan Cheuse, author of The Fires, which we released in
September, will be featured on NPRs Weekend Edition, talking with
Scott Simon about the book and his experiences. Check your local
listings and, of course, well have a link available next week at
www.alancheuse.com/reviews.html
. Youll find two other radio
interviews on that page, as well. Spin by and have a listen, and
check out
www.alancheuse.com/the_fires.html
for more details on The
Fires.
The Fires Tour Update
Its been a long road for Alan. We launched the tour in New York on
September 7th and the last stop will be at Porter Square Books in
Cambridge, Mass. on November 14th. Alan and The Fires were well
received at the Texas Book Festival and the Miami Book Fair this past
week, so were certainly ending with a bang. For those of you in the
Cambridge area, mark your calendars. Alan will be reading at 7pm, and
you may get to meet Pagan Kennedy as well, who will be in attendance
at the reading. For directions and further details, please visit the
Porter Square website:
www.portersquarebooks.com/NASApp/store/IndexJsp
Awards Program Update
We have less than two months to go! The deadline for our current
Awards Program is December 31st, 2007. Guidelines and an application
form are available at
www.sfwpawards.com
and, if you have trouble
with the site, just send an SASE to:
Santa Fe Writers Project
#350
369 Montezuma Ave
Santa Fe, NM 87501
Final judge Robert Olen Butler is eagerly looking forward to the
entries, which well be sending off to him for review in January.
Dont wait till the last minute!
The SFWP Forums
Last month, we announced the launch of the SFWP forums at
www.sfwp.com/forum/index.php
.
We hope to provide a voice for the community through those forums, as
well as provide a central area to collect news and updates from all of
the different divisions within SFWP, so stop by and participate. Hope
to see you there!
Until next time --

(1) 2007 Awards Program: Extended to January 15th
(2) SFWP Online Updates
(3) Previous Winners in print
1) Welcome to the Santa Fe Writers Project newsletter. A quick note before the holidays – we are extending the awards program by 15 days. The new deadline is now January 15th.
The cause for this extension is our fault. We’ve been wildly busy working with Alan Cheuse, author of our second title, The Fires. Alan’s been invited to two high profile events in mid-January, and preparing for these events is taking up all of our time. The first event, on the 14th of January, is a special talk at the CEO Club in New York. That will be followed by an appearance at the Third Annual ABA Winter Institute, where Alan will be at a booth signing books and discussing his work.
For more details on the Awards Program, including guidelines and an application form, please visit
www.sfwpawards.com
. This year’s contest is judged by Pulitzer Prize-winner Robert Olen Butler, and we’ve got $5000 in cash awards to hand out. Don’t miss this round – it’s an exciting time for the SFWP family.
2) My second item this month is SFWP Online. Our webpages have seen some updates in the last few weeks. Alan continues to tour for The Fires and we’ll keep you posted on future readings at
www.alancheuse.com/events.html
.
And some exciting news: Alan was interviewed by Scott Simon on NPR’s Weekend Edition. If you missed it, we have the podcast available right here:
www.alancheuse.com/reviews.html
.
For you Ray Robertson fans, his second title is going strong in Canada, and was just named one of the 100 best books of the year by Quill & Quire. News and events are at:
www.rayrobertson.com/events.html
. SFWP is currently negotiating for the worldwide edition in 2009 – so stay tuned!
And over on our literary journal, Cate McGowan interviewed author Robin Lippincott:
www.sfwp.org/2007/11/17/fabulous-interview-with-robin-lippincott/
.
3) In a previous newsletter, I mentioned some of our published prize winners from past contests. Writing’s a tough job, so I can’t mention them enough… You can find some of our published winners linked up at
www.sfwpawards.com/history.php
. Please take a moment to check them out.
Happy holidays from everyone at SFWP! See you next year!

February 2008

www.sfwp.org
Welcome to the SFWP newsletter. Sorry we missed last month – things have been busy. We’re racing forward with our third book release, due out next September. I’ll have more about that next time. For this newsletter, we’ll focus on the SFWP Literary Awards Program – which concluded on January 15th.
Since 2000, the Awards Program has been a tremendous success. Many of our winning authors have enjoyed publication, and you can find information on them at
www.sfwpawards.com/history.php
Judging for the 2007 program began on February 1st. Robert Olen Butler will be selecting three prize winners. The judging process is different each year, as we give the judge free license. Typically, we have a list of finalists available a couple weeks after judging begins, and the winners should follow shortly after. As soon as I do have the list of finalists, I will make it public. Stay tuned to our message boards for the announcement at:
www.sfwp.com/forum
And, of course, keep an eye on all of our webpages for announcements. The main page is
www.sfwp.com
, the literary journal is at
www.sfwp.org
, and the Awards Program homepage can be found at
www.sfwpawards.com
.
Press News:
For those of you in Canada, don’t miss out on Ray Robertson’s latest novel – “What Happened Later.” It’s an amazing telling of Kerouac’s last years, interwoven with Ray’s own youth. Check it out at:
www.rayrobertson.com/whl.html
Coming up in September is new work from Pagan Kennedy titled “The Dangerous Joy of Dr. Sex and Other True Stories.” We’re going to have lots of news there as things develop.
Until next time!

PW Starred Review
Welcome to the Santa Fe Writers Project Newsletter. I’ve been snowed under by review copies of The Dangerous Joy of Dr. Sex, our upcoming September release. As I type this, several hundred envelopes ready to hit the post office surround my desk. Quite a time. But it’s paid off -- We have received a starred review from Publisher’s Weekly! You can find it online at:
www.publishersweekly.com/article/CA6561299.html?industryid=47159
We’ll be collecting all the reviews at:
www.dangerousjoy.com/dj_reviews.html
Dangerousjoy.com
That last link is to the book’s new website (still somewhat under construction) at
www.dangerousjoy.com
. Everything you need to know is over there, and we’ll be adding some background material to the Multimedia section as the weeks go on.
We do have review copies available so, if you run a blog, shoot us an email through the contact link on that site and let us know.
Finalists at Sfwp.org
Editor Cate McGowan has started posting stories from the 2007 Literary Awards Program finalist pool. Don’t miss out on new work from these exciting authors at
www.sfwp.org
. The list of finalists can be found at
www.sfwp.com/forum/index.php/topic,20.0.html
2009 Literary Awards Program
There have been a few emails asking about the next Awards Program. I’m afraid it won’t be till 2009, as all our resources are dedicated to the Dangerous Joy book release this year. We are currently working with a short list of judges, and I will make an announcement when we settle on one. Hopefully that’ll be within the next couple of months. The 2009 Awards Program is tentatively set to start in the spring of 2009 and end in the fall.
Until next time!

Welcome

Dangerous Joy
Washington Post article
Welcome to the SFWP newsletter.
My new goal is to cut down on emails, so I’ll be using the SFWP blog for updates, instead of a monthly newsletter. These emails will still go out on occasion to mark big events, but everybody should tune to
http://santafewritersproject.blogspot.com/
to keep up to speed on what’s happening with SFWP. I’ll try to update twice a week.
2009 Literary Awards Program
We’ve not yet updated the Awards site at
www.sfwpawards.com
, but I did announce the program on the blog at:
http://santafewritersproject.blogspot.com/2008/08/2009-literary-awards-program.html
and I’ll be detailing some of the guidelines and FAQ’s both on the blog and on the forums at
www.sfwp.com/forum/index.php?board=10.0
. This year’s judge is our own Pagan Kennedy, and you can read all about her over at
www.pagankennedy.net
and
www.dangerousjoy.com
.
Dangerous Joy
While the 2009 Awards Program doesn’t start till January, you can get to know Pagan’s work in the next couple of weeks. Our latest title will be officially released on September 1st.
www.dangerousjoy.com
has details, excerpts, reviews, multimedia, and ordering information. I’ve tried to beef that page up, so do check it out. Working with Pagan has been a dream of mine for a very long time, so this is an exciting project for me. I hope all of you enjoy it as well.
Washington Post article
The Washington Post Magazine will be profiling me in the “Washington Originals” section this coming Sunday, August 17th. The interview will also be online, and I’ll link it up on the blog and the forums when it comes out. I’ve not read the article, so I’m not sure what direction it’ll take, but SFWP will be a bit part of the feature.
That’s all for now. See you online!

Fatal Light news
2009 Awards Program
Welcome to the SFWP newsletter. There have been a few questions since I’ve become somewhat erratic in sending out newsletters. If you’re reading this, then you haven’t been missing any mailings. I’m leaning more on the forums and the blog for updates these days, and you can visit those sites at:
www.sfwp.com/forum
http://santafewritersproject.blogspot.com
If you have a Feedburner account, or if you want to receive email alerts when I do update the blog, then head on over to:
http://feeds.feedburner.com/SantaFeWritersProject
Distributor Holiday Sale
Our distributor, IPG, is having a 40% off sale on 30,000 of their titles, including the last three SFWP titles. Head on over to
www.ipgbook.com
for details. The sale code is 87bgyFq. The discount is only available through December 12th, and just for folks in the US.
Fatal Light news
The 20th Anniversary edition of Richard Currey’s Fatal Light will be on the shelves in April. Right now, I’m surrounded by the ARC’s and getting ready to mail them out. If you’re a book blogger, then let me know if you’re interested in a galley at
info@sfwp.com
. I only have a limited number. And stay tuned to
www.richardcurrey.com
(or the forums, or the blog) for updates. The pre-order information should be up in just a few weeks.
2009 Awards Program
The 2009 Awards Program webpage is live at
www.sfwpawards.com
. Pagan Kennedy is judging this year, and we’ve lowered the entry fee to $25 ($20 if you’re a student). We’ll also be working with the Irene Goodman Literary Agency, who’ll consider the top three winners for representation. More details on them can be found at
www.irenegoodman.com
. The grand prize is $1750, and the second and third prizes are $1000 each.
Though the program doesn’t officially begin till next year, the entry forms are up right now. And you can help me hunt for typos and errors on the page! FAQ’s, guidelines, and full details are all there for you, and you can direct any further questions to
submissions@sfwp.com
.
